Paths and Access

This subject is quite complicated and, since it is copiously documented elsewhere, this page is a pointer for those who wish to find out more.

Basic information on local path routes, widths, permitted uses and access rights can be found on the council web site.

Look at frequently asked questions, or search for ‘Rights of Way’ or 'ROW'.

Look up Rights of Way Improvement Plan to see what is planned for the future. If you want to find out about the Countryside and Rights of Way Act (CRoW) and access rules, you might want to start here.

If you're out on a walk and you encounter a problem, make a note of it with a map (or GPS) reference if possible. Double-check the route (lookout for any official diversions - temporary or permanent). Later, look up the appropriate council web site for a problem report starting here, or the ROW officer (it comes under the department for Roads & Traffic).

Local Ramblers groups also have footpaths officers who are able to help with enquiries. Look-up other county council web sites for paths outside Solihull boundaries, and you should be able to search for the current means of reporting faults and problems with rights of way. Alternatively, use the Ramblers main website here, which can be used to report a footpath problem anywhere in England or Wales.

If you find a problem with a path please report it. If you can, take a photo or two.

You can report direct to Ramblers at this address https://www.ramblers.org.uk/advice/pathwatch-report-path-features-and-problems.aspx who will then pass to the local council.

Alternatively, if the problem is in an area local to Solihull, contact SMBC providing an accurate location.

You can also help by taking secataurs on a walk to make it easier to get through where the path is overgrown, also helping others who may come along later. You must be certain you are on a public right of way.
